A plant-based or vegan diet (a diet excluding all animal products) can be great to help people lose weight, but there’s actually way more to it than just weight-loss. So today we’ll dive deeper into some other main benefits of a plant-based diet…

…And maybe inspire you to eat more plants in 2022!

1. Improved Gut Health

Most of the benefits of following a plant-based diet start in your gut…

Eating a balanced, colorful plant-based diet will help you nourish your body with a mix of beneficial bacteria that will promote a healthy microbiome. (Which are the trillions of microorganisms that live in your gastrointestinal tract).

Improving your gut health does not only lead to improved digestion… It is also directly linked with a strong immune system, improved mood and high-functioning metabolism. Meaning that you will feel better and healthier overall!

2. Healthy Weight Loss

Foods like fruits and vegetables have less calories per portion than many other food groups. Meaning that having a plate predominantly filled with veggies can help you consume less calories per meal.

Plant-Based diets are typically higher in fiber which can lead to a healthier digestion, frequent bowel movements and feeling fuller for longer.

They also tend to be lower in saturated fats which are associated with a higher risk of obesity and other diseases!

3. Reduce Inflammation

Veggies like kale, spinach, carrots, beets (and many more) are packed with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. And these work as natural remedies to help your body heal and reduce inflammation!

Foods like nuts, olive oil and avocados are also high in Omega-3 fatty acids and healthy fats that help your body fight inflammation too!

So this is your reminder to not be afraid of fats! (When in doubt, stay away from saturated and trans fats that can rise your bad cholesterol levels.)

4. Lower Risk of Heart Disease

Animal products like meat, cheese, and eggs can be high in cholesterol and saturated fats, which in excess, can lead to heart disease.

While fruits, veggies, legumes, and whole grains tend to be lower in saturated fats and higher in fiber which can promote heart function and healthy blood flow and sugar levels.

There’s no doubt that there are plenty of benefits of a plant-based diet! But it is important to make sure your diet is well-balanced, colorful and nutritious to really feel and look your best!
